Certes, en 1648, Jacques Dupuy, garde de la Bibliothèque royale, a fait étendre expressément aux estampes l’obligation de dépôt instituée en 1537 pour les livres, mais la récolte légale n’est sous Colbert que de quelques centaines d’unités. Le ministre a conçu pour la Bibliothèque royale de vastes projets, et considère qu’une belle collection d’images en augmenterait le prestige. Il acquiert celle qu’a constituée Michel de Marolles, abbé de Villeloin, collection qui se monte à cent-vingt mille pièces. »
